Abstract

Therapy and clinical consultation are not isolated from the larger cultural and socio-political environment. An intercultural approach to EMDR therapy recognizes that we live in a pluricultural world. It acknowledges and embraces culture as a central aspect for clinical conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment. It promotes a non-judgmental curiosity that develops questions rather than making assumptions. This chapter discusses ways to consider the dynamics of power, privilege, and position during EMDR therapy and consultation. It includes a consideration of the concepts of othering, broaching, and cultural attunement as strategies for an intercultural approach that acknowledges strengths and encourages empowerment. It emphasizes the importance of connecting with a community of learners to maintain a commitment to the intercultural journey.
