This chapter provides foundational concepts regarding the provision of culturally relevant, therapeutic interventions with African American clients. In addition, this chapter critically examines how EMDR treatment can be incorporated utilizing an antiracist, anti-oppressive, intersectional framework with African American clients who have experienced race-based trauma. Emphasis is placed on critique of a generalized treatment protocol without adaptations, navigating clinician positionality, and highlighting clinical implications when working with African American clients utilizing this approach. A clinical example, clinical recommendations, and practical and contextual strategies are offered to demonstrate implementation of this approach throughout the phases of EMDR protocol.
