Abstract

This chapter describes an integrative adaptation group psychotherapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, or Group EMDR (GEMDR). EMDR has been primarily regarded as an individual-centered approach to psychotherapy. Expanding EMDR therapy to a collective GEMDR version provides a treatment option to clients with particular needs that go beyond the immediate reprocessing of traumatic memories. GEMDR also helps clients with diverse cultural profiles regain resources in this interactional microcosmos. Therapists provide emotional support and containment along with other group members, who function as co therapists. Stabilization and reprocessing phases with the presence of other group members help maintain appropriate collective emotional regulation. The structured eight-phase approach and three-pronged protocol provide parameters for therapists to organize collective case conceptualization and treatment planning. Once the group objectives are set, clients become aware of new possibilities for improvement, and participation in the group may become a powerful tool of incentive toward change.
