Abstract

Within an EMDR therapy approach that embraces cultural competence and addresses culturally based trauma and adversity (CBTA), this chapter focuses on target selection and Phases 3 to 6 of the EMDR therapy procedures. The chapter starts with examples of cross-cultural adaptations of EMDR therapy and encourages clinicians to adapt EMDR methods with cultural attunement. The use of the Blind 2 Therapist (B2T) is a method that can facilitate cross-cultural safety. The chapter features numerous target selection strategies including the depiction of 10 types of CBTA along with multiple examples of potential targets for reprocessing within each of these types of CBTA. Several methods are offered for understanding and identifying internalized cultural messages including recognition of features of internalized oppression and other negative internalized beliefs. Suggestions for successful reprocessing are offered including the use of cognitive interweaves. Clinical examples are offered throughout the chapter.
