This chapter reviews 15 years in the development of EMDR methods used to explore social and cultural identity, build culturally associated resources, reprocess the effects of culturally based trauma and adversity (CBTA), and dismantle social bias. As an evidence-based treatment for trauma, it can be predicted that EMDR therapy can treat the effects of CBTA. This chapter provides a four-part multimodule Group EMDR intervention for CBTA and offers qualitative and quantitative data which affirms the effectiveness of this application. Group EMDR participants routinely report the surprising intensity of culturally related memories once activated and the powerful shifts in adaptive understanding that take place when these memories are strategically addressed through EMDR methods.
