Abstract

Within the context of a book designed to increase culturally competent clinical effectiveness, this chapter provides an opportunity for clinicians to step back and reflect personally and professionally upon their relationship to this work. Clinician readers are encouraged to take a fresh look at their clients through a culturally aware lens and to notice and pursue expanded opportunities in their clinical work. The chapter includes an array of exercises to explore aspects of one’s personal cultural identity and social/cultural experiences. It also offers a series of questions for readers to evaluate their clinical, consultation, and/or training practices and to set goals that are attuned with cultural competence and address culturally based trauma and adversity (CBTA).
