Abstract

This chapter explores the culture, history, stigma, and values of Asian Americans to illuminate therapeutic considerations for the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapist when working with this population. As an Asian American/Pacific Islander psychotherapist I have had the opportunity to work with diverse populations and examine cultural nuances relevant to treatment when working with those from Asian backgrounds. This examination can inform how we utilize EMDR therapy and increase our sensitivity to the dynamics arising in treatment with regard to race, ethnicity, culture, and identity, noting the subtle distinctions and similarities among clients of Asian or Pacific Islander backgrounds. To bring awareness to the unique needs of clients can, in turn, promote more successful treatment outcomes and address aspects of social equity, diversity, and inclusion. Composite clinical case material and pseudonyms have been used to protect the identity of clients.
