Abstract

This chapter helps the reader to differentiate evidence-based culture and infrastructure, identify key components of an effective evidence-based practice (EBP) infrastructure and to assess benefits of a sound evidence-based infrastructure. Adherence to the EBP steps was important for the change to be successful. Of equal importance was the role of mentor in assisting with implementing change by engaging key stakeholders in the decision-implementation process. The Institute of Medicine (2001) has charged healthcare organizations with creating an infrastructure to support EBP, thereby helping provide optimal patient care within a healthcare environment of rapidly expanding knowledge and change. Successful implementation of EBP in healthcare organizations requires a sound EBP infrastructure. The chapter identifies benefits of an EBP infrastructure to nurses and patients. It describes several examples of EBP resources and materials and discusses the important roles each has in supporting full implantation of EBP.
