Abstract

Professional nurses use evidence-based practice (EBP) to foster critical reasoning, sound clinical judgment, and effective communication to deliver impactful patient-centered care. This chapter identifies the required American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) EBP Essentials from Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and describes the knowledge and skills required for achieving EBP competencies for each degree level. It clarifies and delineates the roles and expectations of the nurse in EBP at each professional nursing degree level. In line with AACN Essentials and Institute of Medicine (IOM) mandates, the chapter underscores EBP activities for BSN, Master of Science in nursing (MSN), and DNP graduates that help ensure safe, effective, and efficient care. It reviews EBP knowledge and skill requirements for each nursing degree level and emphasizes organizational obligations to provide EBP opportunities for each level of degree preparation.
