Abstract

Preparation is required for both treating eating disorders (EDs) and healing the trauma that either causes or exacerbates an ED. This chapter divides preparation into three segments: stabilization, skills and resource development, and short-term successes. Stabilization encompasses medical and pharmaceutical attention, and often must address the life context of the client and requires an approach that integrates various professional areas of expertise. Skills and resources must then be developed and practiced to enable the client to navigate the emotional waters of treatment and to slowly begin to redefine themselves apart from the ED identity. Finally, skills and resources must be put into practice to achieve concrete and short-term successes in preparation for the more intensive work of the trauma processing phase.
