Abstract

This chapter provides an explanation of how the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is used to treat eating disorders (EDs) and trauma. Based on the assumption that we all have an inherent healing essence, the Self, that cannot be damaged by trauma, IFS offers a deeply respectful approach to healing. Instead of trying to control or eliminate ED symptoms, IFS helps clients establish relationships with the parts of themselves who use these behaviors to cope with all kinds of trauma. As these protective parts are helped to trust the client’s Self, they ease up on their protective strategies, so the Self can heal the wounded parts of the system. Using a case vignette, this chapter illustrates how IFS diverges from traditional approaches to ED and trauma treatment by eschewing explicit grounding and stabilization techniques and relying instead on the relational healing power of the therapist’s and client’s Self-energy.
