Abstract

The emerging trends in innovation that will occur over the next several years will be staggering, including everything from the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare, to virtual or augmented reality and wearables for both patients and clinicians. This chapter discusses the most common innovation categories in healthcare, the impact of innovation and technologies on healthcare and patient outcomes, and strategies to promote successful adoption of emerging technologies. It examines three categories of innovation in healthcare, describes the impact that emerging innovations have on nursing practice and patient care outcomes, and discusses strategies by organizational leaders to support the successful adoption and implementation of emerging technologies. There are three broad categories of innovations that impact healthcare: innovations associated with purchasing and using healthcare, innovations in health technology, and innovations in our healthcare-related business models.
