Abstract

The nursing facility is part of a continuum of caregiving. The everyday life of the facility takes place within the rules set by Medicare and Medicaid, labor laws, occupational safety laws, the Life Safety Code, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines for facilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act has specific requirements for nursing facilities. When it comes to the nursing facility, the ADA has specific Standards for Accessible Design, which are available for use. Many of the 2010 Standards are based upon the American National Standards Institute works and their publication “Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities.” Each of these documents is important for the administrator to know and understand so that they can ensure ongoing compliance with the ADA. Most specifically, nursing facilities are using the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design as the standard of expectation.
