Abstract

The CARES tool addresses the broad subject of comfort by focusing on the physical needs of the dying. The comfort section of the CARES tool attempts to encourage creating as much time as possible for the family to create final loving memories and obtain some measure of closure. It focuses on pain management, and the second provides prompts and suggestions to eliminate interruptions to the grieving process for the dying and their families. The comfort section of the CARES tool emphasizes the important role of patient advocate. It encourages nurses to act in the best interest of the individuals under their care through the use of effective communication, anticipation of needs, and the promotion of a peaceful death. A strong patient advocate works to ensure the dying individual’s wishes are known and all parties involved are fully informed prior to any decision-making process.
