Abstract

When caring for the dying, goals of care should always be developed based on individual and family preferences. The most common goals for the dying and their families focus on the elimination of suffering, devising methods to ensure good communication, and respecting and supporting family rituals. Each dying experience is unique and should reflect the needs and desires of the persons involved. When setting goals, it is important to be focused on the needs and desires of the dying individual. Special nursing skills are needed to address the final days to hours of life when all treatment options have been exhausted and comfort measures are the agreed course of action. Communication and compassion are two of the most essential skills necessary when addressing medical futility. The dying individual and his or her family must feel they are cared about, valued, and respected.
