Abstract

This chapter addresses how eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is used in the family treatment setting as an additional intervention when a family member is challenged by trauma, anxiety, or other clinical diagnoses. While EMDR therapy is not generally used in a group setting, it is frequently used as individual therapy during family treatment, so that systemically, the impaired family member has a chance to regain a functionality that helps to restore family relationships. This chapter explains how EMDR therapy works from a neurobiological view and offers information and supportive evidence across a broad range of EMDR and other neurological treatment experts for its effectiveness.
