Abstract

This chapter covers both lower and upper extremity restoration and rehabilitation and serves as a handy reference for busy practitioners to support sound clinical decision-making. It begins with basic anatomy, kinesiology, and a recap of surgical decisions principles and post-operative care for amputees. The chapter establishes realistic rehabilitation goals with the patient and rehabilitation team that is fundamental to planning and implementing optimal rehabilitation and prosthetic interventions. The goal of prosthetic rehabilitation and prosthetic restoration can range from no prosthesis, with a wheelchair being the primary form of mobility, to international competitive sport participation. The provisional prosthesis aids in determining the type of definitive prosthesis that is best suited for the amputee’s lifestyle long term. The prescribing physician must provide medical documentation to support the type of prosthetic components that make up the prosthetic prescription.
