Abstract

This chapter discusses the identification and treatment of impulse-control disorders (ICDs) as they are displayed in college student populations. As the classification of ICDs has changed, so too has the developmental trajectory of college students. The chapter presents current and potential future diagnostic criteria for ICDs and provides information about etiology, assessment, and treatment options specific to the college student population. It provides a brief description of promising interventions within classified ICDs. The disorder classifications reflect changes in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), such as binge eating disorder (BED), compulsive buying disorder (CBD), hair pulling disorder (HPD), and skin picking disorder (SPD). From psychological research, the chapter presents the motivations of individuals with an ICD as well as the faulty decision-making and coping skills utilized. Through survey research, more is known about gender differences, prevalence rates, and comorbidities.
