Abstract

College counseling centers are frequently called upon to assist students with issues ranging from developmental transition to active psychosis, but many believe that the college experience is particularly ideal for the development of eating disorders. This chapter discusses the issue of eating disorders on college campuses, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other nonspecified eating disorders. It presents a thorough description of presenting symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and treatment protocols. The chapter highlights how the eating disorder frequently manifests. Finally, it provides multicultural implications and best practices for assessment and prevention. College counseling centers can participate in this call for research by collecting, analyzing, and publishing data on their eating disorder demographics, assessments, and treatment outcomes. This activity has the potential to benefit not only the individual college student of today, but students from around the globe for generations to come.
