Abstract

This chapter provides information on effective methods of current suicide assessment practices and also provides suggestions for suicide prevention based on the prevalent risk factor of a feeling of meaningless of life. It includes a brief review of risk factors, suicide assessment, intervention protocols and a discussion of suicide research concerning the inclusion of protective factors. The chapter presents a review of the literature on the relationship of meaning making and suicide, and the effective use of meaning-making strategies in the treatment and prevention of college student suicide. However, it is important to note that because of the covert nature of suicide, college counseling centers should actively advocate for campus-wide awareness and intervention programming. Information about counseling center services, local suicide prevention organizations, and national hotline numbers should be easily accessible and widely visible so that students at risk are able to find resource information without difficulty.
