Nursing curricula must constantly evolve to improve patient care quality and keep pace with the ever-changing healthcare environment. The Future of Nursing Report 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Health Equity calls for nursing education to prepare students to address the determinants of health, promote health equity, and become advocates for the well-being of the population. The report calls for quality nursing education that prepares a diverse nursing workforce focused on the health and wellness of all people. In addition, Healthy People 2030 guides nurse educators to assure future professional nurses promote health and wellness across the life span, including utilizing complementary therapies when appropriate. These influential initiatives, as well as the American Nurses Association’s scope of practice and professional nursing standards, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing criteria for education, have created a directive for nurse educators to respond to the needs of the population and work to integrate complementary therapies into nursing education to promote person-centered, holistic and individualized nursing care. Increasingly, nursing programs are integrating complementary therapies into nursing education, beginning with the development of appropriate learner outcomes, activities, and evaluation strategies.
