Abstract

Imagery is a mind–body intervention that uses the power of the imagination to bring about change in physical, emotional, or spiritual dimensions. It is a cognitive behavioral strategy that uses the person’s own imagination and mental processing through all senses - visual, aural, olfactory, proprioceptive and kinesthetic. Imagery is commonly used in healthcare for both children and adults to manage acute and chronic illness through relief of symptoms and promotion and enhancement of wellness. Imagery in health care is most often in the form of guided imagery. Guided imagery incorporates the use of relaxation techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing or progressive muscle relaxation, to help the participant focus the attention. Suggestions can be made for positive growth, change, or improvement. Imagery is also a useful complementary therapy for nurses and nursing students for self-care.
