Abstract
Curriculum mapping is a process used to identify when, where, and how content is addressed across the curriculum in an effort to recognize gaps and redundancies; to ensure that content is introduced, reinforced, and assessed; to guarantee that instruction and assessment are aligned to what students are expected to learn; and to promote self-study and critical analysis. Health professions education programs devise various strategies for mapping depending on multiple factors, including where they are in the curriculum development process, resource availability, and time constraints. This chapter not only explores the advantages of curriculum mapping, but also offers helpful tips for where to begin. Suggestions that can make the process a little more effective and efficient are examined, as are strategies for resolving challenges that may surface. Curriculum mapping, though not a simple activity, is an effective strategy for ensuring depth and breadth of core content coverage and skill development.
