Abstract

Problem-solving is more than just solving problems. To be a good problem solver, one also needs to know how to listen, how to communicate, how to “read” an organization, how to have confidence in oneself and one’s abilities, and how to think critically, among many other skills. The competencies being sought by employers are generally referred to as “soft skills”, while the functional business content areas, also sought by employers, are referred to as “hard skills”. This chapter describes how the Problem-Solving Method helps to develop these “soft skill” management and leadership competencies. It provides an overview of the leadership competencies that are specific to healthcare, developed by the National Center for Healthcare Leadership. In mastering the Problem Solving Method, one will simultaneously be developing skills and competencies that will support developing the capabilities to become a manager and leader, regardless of the positional authority in the organization.
