Abstract

This chapter explores application of online learning in the professional practice environment, the impact on both learners and educators, and the outcomes that can be supported or realized by its use. It includes an overview of the role of clinical nurse educators, known as nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners, and their pivotal role in supporting professional, ancillary staff, and student learning needs in a clinical setting. It presents several applications of online learning, including for clinical orientation, preceptor preparation, competency management, and delivery of mandatory training and regulatory updates. There are benefits and challenges when implementing online education. Integral to the success of online and technology-supported learning is a solid foundation in adult learning principles, sound educational design, and thoughtful decision making by all involved. Consistent evaluation of return on investment is a key factor in the ongoing success and adoption of online learning in the future of NPD.
