Sexuality is defined as a central aspect of being human throughout life and encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. However, in a population with increasing health problems, older adults may experience a variety of challenges in fulfilling their sexual needs and desires. Sexual health may be promoted through nursing interventions provided by generalist and advanced practice nurses that will promote quality of life (QOL) among older adults. As a result of menopause, women experience a significant reduction in estrogen that may impact sexual health and function. Some sexual changes that occur as women age result in changes to the female anatomy. As a result of the normal age-related changes that older women experience as part of the aging process, aging women experience some changes in sexual health and function. Health care providers rarely ask about these changes during routine or illness-related health assessments.
