Abstract

In the early stage of dementia communication problems may be missed or attributed to “growing older” or “feeling stressed". These communication problems can occur before any memory deficits are apparent or the disease is recognized. This chapter reviews communication problems that could be evident in residents with mild and advanced dementia. It describes effective techniques to facilitate communication in residents with dementia. The chapter explores ways in which residents with dementia communicate health care changes nonverbally and provides a list of signs that could communicate the presence of pain in residents with dementia. Behaviors and body language become important clues to the presence of problems. Skill in interpreting verbal and nonverbal communication can assist in identifying signs and symptoms that could easily be missed. Effective measures to communicate with residents who have dementia can enhance their sense of well-being and promote maximum comfort.
