The author’s own experience provides an example of how one can begin to select an nurse practitioner (NP) specialty. Various NP specialty areas are available for certification. First, it is essential that one must understand the types of NP specialties available. Then, one should follow some recommended guidelines in deciding which is right for them. New or potential NPs consider a variety of areas for certification, including acute care, adult- gerontology, family, pediatric, psychiatric, women’s health, neonatal, and occupational health. Ones educational background and nursing experience play an important role in selecting their specialty. The author’s hospital-based nursing experience was primarily in pediatrics in a large, urban medical center. However, community health nursing was such a powerful experience. More than 15 years of experience in family practice, the author has managed the acute and chronic health care needs of patients ranging from newborns to those older than 100 years.
