Abstract

This chapter presents the overall expectations for clinical courses. It presents basic ideas for immersion in the nurse practitioner (NP) culture, as well as a variety of ways to get started. Clinical training is where one actually learns the NP role. A family nurse practitioner (FNP), for example, is required to complete at least 600 hours because of the nature of the experiences required, whereas the adult-gerontology nurse practitioner (AGNP) student is mandated to complete a minimum of 500 hours. Nurse practitioners are also likely to be concerned with how to narrow the various clinical preceptor possibilities and fit it all into their already busy schedule. NP students express concerns about successfully juggling work commitments, family and other personal obligations, and clinical hours, along with related coursework. After each clinical day, nurse practitioners must write out the most common diagnoses seen, and details of the treatment plan.
