Abstract

In the past, bed frames were strung with ropes. Today, a patient bed is a specialized device known as a support surface, with pressure redistribution being the goal. Choosing the correct support surface to prevent or manage a pressure injury is as critical as the diagnosis. The amount of money spent annually for support surfaces is staggering and so is the complexity of these support surfaces. They range from reactive supports to active supports, integrated bed systems, nonpowered beds, and overlays, to simple standard mattresses. Although the support surface is only one part of a comprehensive treatment plan, it can be crucial to a patient’s outcome.
