Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as the “…ability to recognize the meanings of emotions… and to reason and problem-solve on the basis of them” (Mayer, Caruso & Salovey, 1999, p. 267). EI is operationalized with the following skills: accurate identification of emotions in self and others, understanding emotions, using emotions to reason (integrating thinking and feeling), and managing emotions. This chapter uses these skills as a framework to describe the use of EI abilities across the whole continuum of oncology care, from possibility of diagnosis to end of life decision making. For patients with oncological disorders, EI skills improve clinical outcomes, enhance nurse performance and reduce risk. The same EI abilities also support oncology nurses' care of themselves, their coworkers, and others on the care team. The physical, emotional, social and spiritual labor required of oncology nursing make EI abilities of particular importance.
