Abstract

The mission and tools of public health work alongside and complement the strengths of other sectors in society that have historically worked to stop elder abuse (EA). Using a public health model provides important frameworks and conceptual approaches that position the field of public health well to make essential contributions to EA prevention. This chapter highlights EA as a preventable, public health problem and explores successes, issues, and challenges encountered in attempting to effectively address EA from a public health perspective. By linking the 10 essential public health services with other existing frameworks used in the fields of public health and violence, the chapter sets out a systematic and integrated approach to EA that can be actualized by public health practitioners at the federal, state, and local levels. Attempts to address EA as a public health concern may benefit greatly from the application of the 10 essential public health services.
