Abstract

Simulation-based learning (SBL) provides the learner with a real-life scenario in an accurate setting where participants respond as they would in an actual event. Many healthcare institutions and academic settings are using SBL to educate and evaluate healthcare professionals and those in educational programs to become future healthcare professionals. SBL includes 3 stages. In the first stage the participant receives information from the facilitator about the scenario, discovers the objectives of the simulation, what their role will be, and other necessary information. In the second stage the participant actively engages in the simulation, and in the third stage, debriefing, participants share their experience, emotions, and actions. SBL can also be used to identify problem-solving and decision-making skills. This chapter discusses the principles of human simulator simulation learning in healthcare education. It describes the variety of methodologies for the use of human simulator simulation and integrates the principles of interprofessional teamwork.
