The unique facets of women’s sexual and reproductive healthcare are complemented and complicated by legal issues. Until recently, access to contraception was seriously limited for most American women. Birth control was illegal in most states; therefore, women experienced significant challenges when trying to make choices concerning their fertility. The legal system can be challenging to navigate, and healthcare consumers, providers, and institutions may become overwhelmed when the two intersect. A provider of women’s healthcare should have an overview of key legal issues in women’s healthcare and an understanding of the societal and legal context in which care is provided to be able to help a woman to navigate the intersection of healthcare and the law. Referrals should be made to healthcare law experts to assist women in their times of legal need.
