Abstract

Although in early development, information and communication technology (ICT) is viable to aid older adults in everyday life. Practical ICT is now used in elder medical tracking of vital signs, medical visits, physical therapy, communication, shopping, banking, and safety alerts. With training on ICT use the older population will continue living as they have in the past technological modifications. This chapter helps the reader to: understand what ICT is and how it can be of use in an assisted living community; define general terminology when speaking about ICT; know the history and evolution of ICT, and how it affects our everyday lives; understand how the use of ICTs can aid both residents and caregivers in assisted living communities; look to ICT as a tool for improving and safeguarding a resident’s ability to age in place; and consider the quality of life enhancement that ICT may offer an assisted living community.
