Abstract

Continuing education is an integral part of professional development. This chapter discusses continuing education so as to assist the reader in understanding the benefits of excellent continuing-education programs, as well as the legal requirements that vary by state. Leaders in the continuing-education field share their model programs, both with traditional classroom and online curriculum descriptions. The chapter focuses on continuing education, a key component of professional staff development for both assisted living administrators and direct-care staff. It summarizes regulations for continuing-education requirements by state. The chapter then continues with descriptions of types and models of continuing-education programs from professionals in the industry. It discusses various factors associated with the effectiveness of continuing education in long-term care. Continuing education is an important way to maintain and update the knowledge and skills necessary to run a successful assisted living community.
