Abstract

The operating room is full of many different energy and stapling devices. These devices provide quick and precise energy and stapling for the surgeon to employ throughout any surgical procedure. Energy devices can control bleeding and seal off vessels, and stapling devices can accurately cut and place a line of staples. It is important for the scrub nurse, certified surgical technologist, RN first assistant, and circulating nurse to know exactly how to use each device safely and to understand the differences among these devices. There are many different types of surgical energy, including: ultrasonic; advanced bipolar; radiofrequency; cryoablation; and microwave ablation. This chapter helps the reader to learn about: different types of surgical energy; different tissue effects; settings, hand pieces, and tips; safety considerations; and different types of stapling devices.
