Abstract

The electrosurgery unit is one of the most utilized and valued pieces of equipment in the operating room. Therefore, it is imperative that all members of the surgical team understand how it should be properly used to minimize the potential for injury to both the patient and the surgical team. This chapter helps the reader to learn about: components of the electrosurgery unit (ESU); methods of electrosurgery; different tissue effects; ESU settings and hand pieces; safety considerations; and the need for smoke evacuation. The ESU provides high-frequency electrical current to tissue to: remove lesions, stop bleeding, cut tissue, and vaporize tissue. The ESU can provide different tissue effects depending upon the type of tip, the tissue, and how the tip is used. The ESU is a very effective piece of equipment, but safety is paramount whenever using this device.
