Abstract

Touch has been central to the practice of nursing since its inception. This chapter describes a form of touch-and its application in nursing care known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as acupressure. Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press certain points on the body to stimulate the body’s self-curative abilities. TCM is an ancient system of health developed more than 3,000 years ago in Asia. It is based on the concept that qi flows throughout the body and that balance of yin and yang forces represents health and well-being. A TCM practitioner would follow a multistep diagnostic process to choose the correct points to stimulate. Nurses can incorporate acupressure into the care of patients by using some common points that have specific actions to relieve common symptoms. Some conditions for which acupressure has been used are: nausea, pain and gastrointestinal disorders.
