Abstract

Neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) are experts in neonatal care and provide advanced care management and support to parental caregivers and families during times of significant stress. NNPs work collaboratively with other healthcare providers in both acute and nonacute settings as they assess, diagnose, and manage the health of newborns, infants, and toddlers up to 2 years of age. Family-centered and developmental care are also clinical focuses encompassing the role of an NNP. The NNP manages high-risk infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting independently and often in collaboration with a neonatologist or other specialist. This chapter provides a comprehensive guide to clinical simulation scenarios for NNP. It discusses the role of NNP, and describes scope of practice, expected competencies, credentialing, professional associations, and professional journals. The chapter provides clinical simulation scenarios for neonatal abstinence syndrome (opiod crisis), breaking bad news, necrotizing enterocolitis, and NICU consult for borderline viability.
