Abstract

Cancer rehabilitation services are becoming increasingly integrated with oncology care and represent an enormous opportunity for medical rehabilitation specialists. Challenges exist in both the rehabilitation and the oncology aspects of care, and understanding how to navigate these potential barriers is critical in developing a cancer rehabilitation program. The style, focus, and scope of a program depend heavily on whether rehabilitation providers are working in a community setting or at a large academic hospital, and the degree of integration between rehabilitation and oncology services. Although cancer rehabilitation care is expanding rapidly, misconceptions about rehabilitation may be entrenched in cancer centers, and breaking into a busy clinical environment is not without difficulty. Although this may seem intimidating at first, understanding that patients must have access to rehabilitation care, and that the rehabilitation team provides care that no other service can, will help convey the importance of the program.
