Abstract

Globally, nursing organizations play a valuable role in the advancement of nursing and nursing education. To share the advancement of nursing education in South Africa, this chapter addresses professional nursing education in South Africa and focuses on a specific organization, the Forum of University Nursing Deans of South Africa (FUNDISA), as a national driver of change in South Africa. The history of the development of nursing education in South Africa follows the historical trends of the country, and in the 1900s was linked to apartheid policies. The rationale was to prepare the professional nurse for the integration of psychiatric care in the general health system. A certificate program leading to a qualification as an enrolled nurse in accordance with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) Regulation. This program included community health nursing science in order to prepare the professional nurse to be able to practice in community health care settings.
