Abstract

From a mindful perspective, health care providers can operate with greater focus and attention, and with a consistent orientation toward enhancing patient encounters. When people are better positioned to convey interest, acceptance, availability, and a desire to understand, they can then select effective words and phrases that invite patients to share their concerns. This chapter outlines techniques that have been used for decades to elicit patient disclosure. It is important to remember that sometimes within the health care culture people adopt words and phrases that outsiders have difficulty translating. Clinician use of jargon remains a major barrier to clear communication and leads to considerable misunderstanding, patient nonadherence, and interpersonal conflict. Words/phrases that challenge a patient’s beliefs can be harmful as well, as can abrupt changes in topic or focus. The chapter then summarizes therapeutic and nontherapeutic communication techniques.
