Michael J. Dowling describes the opportunities for leadership and the essential ingredients for excellence in health care delivery. He considers one of the key ingredients the “right people” and believes that nurses can be the catalysts to lead the health care team. He continues teaching at Harvard and at North Shore-LIJ Health System’s corporate university, the Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI), and serving on many health care boards. Informatics will continue to play a large part in health care, including in the role of nursing. To make North Shore-LIJ one of the best health systems in the United States, offering the highest quality of care and financial success, he have sought to build a consistent corporate-learning culture in which nurses play an integral role. Placing nurses in key strategic roles at North Shore-LIJ Health System is elevating the status and knowledge base of nursing and improving care for patients.
