Abstract

The health educator role of the faith community nurse (FCN) has been extensively developed in practice. In this role, the FCN empowers the individual, family, or congregation to incorporate health and healing practices from a faith perspective to achieve positive health outcomes. Faith community nursing practice respects the dignity of the person and views stewardship of the body and personal health as a responsibility to God and respect for His creation. This chapter explains some health education models for behavioral change. According to the Health Belief Model (HBM), a person has a desire to avoid illness or to recover from illness. The Health Promotion Model (HPM) integrates several constructs from the expectancy-value theory of motivation with social cognitive theory within a nursing perspective of holistic human functioning. The goal of health education is to provide clients with theory-based information from which to make informed health decisions and lifestyle choices.
