Abstract

Community assessment is the process of looking at a community’s characteristics from an analytical point of view to identify its strengths and weaknesses or assets and liabilities. “The faith community nurse (FCN) collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s holistic health or the situation”. According to Clark, all faith communities demonstrate characteristics of faith, spirituality, theology, and religion that can be identified and assessed. Health ministries are actualized by building caring communities that nurture each person in body, mind, and spirit; by promoting good stewardship of one’s body; and by working for an effective system of health care. Demographic data about the membership help the FCN know how to plan for health education programs and how to determine and prioritize needed services. The educational level of the congregation, the cultural diversity, and the use of languages other than English are all important data to collect and analyze.
