Definitions—Some Serious, Some Not

The author has selected over 80 definitions—some serious, some not—from a collection of more than 300 filed in his computer over the last 15 years. Most of them are original, but a few are borrowed from miscellaneous sources. Using a format introduced by Ambrose Bierce around the turn of the 20th century, the author covers a broad range of topics, including politics, flattery, religion, courage, money, psychiatry, dissent, history, and peace.
