Abstract

This chapter discusses hand and wrist injuries, and presents the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of specific injuries including fractures. It describes the fractures of distal radius, distal ulna, metacarpal, phalangeal, and volar plate, and hamate hook fractures. Metacarpal injuries includes metacarpal fractures, transverse shaft fracture, oblique and spiral shaft fractures, neck fracture, thumb metacarpal fractures, and metacarpal base fractures. The chapter also describes dislocations of distal radioulnar joint, lunate and perilunate, metacarpophalangeal joint, proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. It also describes many types of instabilities such as scapholunate/dorsal intercalated segmental instability, lunotriquetral/volar intercalated segmental instability, and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) instability. The chapter examines the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injury, and many muscle/tendon injuries including De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, Intersection syndrome, Jersey finger, Mallet finger, Trigger finger, and Boutonniere deformity.
