Abstract

The Caring Nurse-Patient Interactions (CNPI-70) scale was intended to facilitate research on the links between caring and patient outcomes. The CNPI scales can guide nurses to adopt caring attitudes through all their actions and interventions, beyond simply being nice to the patient. This scale is also being used to orient students and faculty in teaching and learning caring attitudes. The person answering the CNPI questionnaire (i.e., patient, family, nurse, or nursing student) has to circle the number from 1 to 5 that best corresponds to what he or she thinks about each of these attitudes or behaviors. The rating scales and the formulation of the statements vary according to the aspects being measured and the target clientele. It is therefore important to select the rating scale that corresponds to each aspect as well as the questionnaire corresponding to the target clientele (patient, family, or nurse version).
