Abstract

This chapter emphasizes the significance of the barriers and facilitators to community-centered public health and the mindset central to address the healthcare, behavioral health, and policy implications of obstinate and emerging health inequities, as well as tackling their root causes, through culturally responsive strategies for disproportionately impacted communities. Approaches that elevate marginalized communities as senior partners in planning, implementing, and evaluating strategies will promote community leadership and increase adherence to health communication, prevention, and risk reduction. The chapter discusses how a public health crisis can be leveraged to strengthen and advance community-centered public health equity. Efforts should be characterized by strong data (research or evaluation), contextually relevant community engagement strategies, and action (policy, systems, and environmental change approaches). Public health professionals who prioritize these values will empower communities to create datadriven systems that improve health research, practice, and care.
